SNA vs LAX vs LGB: The Best Airport for Disneyland in 2026

Most people pick an airport for Disneyland by opening a map. John Wayne sits 15 miles from the gates, LAX sits 40, so they reserve the cheaper SNA fare and feel clever about it. Then the flight lands at 12:40am and the map stops mattering, because SNA stopped taking scheduled arrivals at 11pm.

That's the part the mileage charts skip. The best airport for Disneyland is the one whose clock fits your trip, not the one with the shortest line on a map. For most people: SNA if the fare is close to LAX, LAX if the timetable forces it, LGB if you get lucky with a nonstop.

We drive all three routes, so we'd rather you landed close. But these airports don't compete on distance. They compete on when they're allowed to land a plane. If you're already leaning toward John Wayne, our John Wayne airport car service covers the pickup side. The rest of this is about choosing the airport before you book the flight.

What is the best airport for Disneyland?

The best airport for Disneyland is SNA if the fare is within about $65 of LAX each way and you land before 11pm. LAX if your schedule needs a late arrival, a red-eye or an international connection. LGB if a nonstop exists, because that's the easiest 13 miles in Southern California.

How far each airport really is from Disneyland

Disney publishes the numbers itself. Its airport guide puts John Wayne about 15 miles from the resort, Long Beach about 13, and LAX about 40. The same page calls John Wayne "the closest airport to the Disneyland Resort," which looks like a typo next to Long Beach's smaller number.

It isn't a typo. Those are two different drives: 15 freeway miles from SNA, 13 from Long Beach that start on city boulevards. Long Beach is usually a few minutes slower, which is why the table below gives SNA the shorter window and Disney can still call John Wayne the closest. Miles are a rough proxy for time, and time is what you're buying.

  • SNA: 15 to 25 minutes to the Harbor Boulevard hotels.
  • LGB: 20 to 30 minutes.
  • LAX: 45 to 90 minutes, and a bad weekday afternoon between 3:30 and 7 can stretch it past two hours.

That LAX number is the one people underestimate, because it isn't a distance problem. You're crossing the middle of Los Angeles County on the 105 and the 5, both of which have opinions at rush hour. Our airport transfers across Orange County run this pattern daily, which is why we quote the LAX leg as a range and not a promise. The John Wayne airport to Disneyland leg is the opposite: a short freeway hop that leaves families in a decent mood on arrival.

The constraint nobody mentions: when you can actually land

John Wayne has a curfew, and it's stricter than most travelers assume. Here's the county's own wording:

"The GANO prohibits commercial departures between 22:00 and 07:00 (08:00 on Sundays) and commercial arrivals between 23:00 and 07:00 (08:00 on Sundays)."

That's from OC Air's access and noise page, and it's worth reading twice: the two halves don't match. Departures stop at 10pm. Arrivals stop at 11pm. The runway is quiet in two blocks, not one: the outbound side shuts an hour earlier.

So there is no such thing as a late-night arrival at SNA, because the last scheduled flights are on the ground before 11pm and no fare class changes that.

There's a narrow exception: the airport director can approve an arrival outside those hours for an emergency, a mechanical issue, a weather delay or air traffic control, but only on a request the airline files in advance for that specific flight, which is why you shouldn't plan around it. A delayed 10:20pm arrival might still make it. A ticket that sells you an 11:20pm arrival isn't an SNA ticket.

The morning side bites too: no departures before 7am means the cheap 6am flight you found isn't leaving from John Wayne, and now you're doing a 4am pickup in Anaheim with a stroller.

Long Beach looks similar and isn't quite. From the noise office FAQ: "LGB operates 24 hours per day, although commercial flights may only schedule service between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 p.m." Scheduled service stops at 10pm, a full hour earlier than SNA's arrivals. But LGB publishes a grace window. Operations between 10pm and 11pm are allowed when weather, air traffic or mechanical trouble caused the delay, and fines start after 11. So a delayed 9:40pm arrival usually still lands. You just can't book one scheduled for 10:30.

LAX has no curfew at all. It's the only one of the three that takes scheduled commercial arrivals around the clock, though terminal and concession hours vary by building, so check your arrival terminal before you count on a 2am coffee. That single fact decides the comparison. Red-eyes, 1:15am arrivals from the East Coast, long-hauls that land when they land: they come in at LAX. Not because it's convenient. Because it's the only one of the three allowed to do it then.

So the question isn't "which airport is closest to Disneyland." It's "what time does my flight land, and which airport is still awake."

What the transfer costs from each airport

One-way, typical market range, October 2026, before gratuity:

FromSUV transfer
SNA$120–$190
LGB$110–$170
LAX$185–$275

Those are market ranges from operators running a black SUV, not our rate card. MJ Limos runs one vehicle: the 2026 Chevy Suburban, up to six passengers, so the SUV column is the only one that applies to us. Sedans cost a little less, Sprinters a lot more; the full rate structure by vehicle is on that page.

Now the arithmetic people skip. Say the LAX fare is $60 cheaper each way than the SNA fare. At the bottom of each band, a market SUV transfer is $185 at LAX against $120 at SNA: $65 more each way, $130 more round trip. Your $120 airfare saving is gone, and you're $10 down before gratuity, which is a percentage, so call it $22 down once 18% lands. You also spent an extra 45 minutes each way in the car with tired kids.

Cheaper airfare is real money, but it isn't the only money, and when the fare gap outgrows the transfer gap LAX wins honestly.

Which airport to pick for your trip

If you're still deciding which airport to fly into for Disneyland, start with your arrival time. It eliminates more options than price does.

You land after 11pm. LAX, and it isn't close, because nothing else is flying. Book the car before the flight and confirm the driver tracks the flight number: a late landing plus a baggage wait is where pickups go wrong.

You're traveling with kids under 8. California requires a car seat or booster in the back seat for children under 8, and kids under 2 ride rear-facing unless they weigh 40 pounds or are 40 inches tall (CHP). Most rideshares won't have the right seat waiting, and the ones that do can't reserve two, and every shuttle that treats seats as an upsell adds a line to the bill. SNA still wins, because a shorter ride with a tired toddler beats the fare difference.

You're flying in from another country. LAX. Long-haul international flights land there, and it's the only one of the three open at 1am.

You found a fare $150 cheaper at LAX. Take it. That's well past the $65 each-way line where the transfer stops eating the saving, and we'd rather you spent the difference in the park than on a car. Build in the extra hour.

If you land at LAX anyway

Then the airport question is settled and only the ride is left. Forty miles on the 105 and the 5, 45 to 90 minutes depending on the hour, plus the LAX-it detour.

We wrote that up separately: LAX to Disneyland transfer options covers pickup points, per-person shuttle math and when a private car actually wins. The short version is that at four people with bags, it usually does.

Frequently Asked Questions

John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, about 15 miles from the resort, and Disney's own guide calls it the closest. Long Beach is listed at roughly 13 miles, but that drive starts on city streets, so both take around 20 minutes.

Not on a scheduled flight. Commercial arrivals are prohibited from 11pm to 7am (8am Sundays) under the county noise ordinance, and departures stop at 10pm. A delayed flight can receive a case-by-case exemption, but you can't book an arrival in that window.

SNA, unless your schedule says otherwise. It's 15 miles instead of 40, and the SUV transfer band sits $65 to $85 below LAX's — $120 to $190 against $185 to $275 — though the two bands overlap at the top. LAX wins when you need a red-eye, a late landing or an international flight, because it's the only one of the three with no curfew.

LAX. SNA's last scheduled arrivals are before 11pm and Long Beach's scheduled service stops at 10pm, so a midnight or 1am landing is an LAX arrival by definition.

A black SUV runs about $120 to $190 one way in the current market, before gratuity. Every MJ Limos ride is a 2026 Suburban that seats up to six, so that's the column you're shopping in.

Yes. The law doesn't exempt chauffeured vehicles: children under 8 need a seat or booster in the back, and children under 2 ride rear-facing unless they reach 40 pounds or 40 inches. Confirm who fits the seat before the trip.
